Charcoal can be used in an expressive drawing style or with a more detailed technique suited to naturalistic art. The medium itself is known to inspire spontaneous and gestural marking as well as soft edges and smudging. Currently, three kinds of charcoals are used in art. Powered charcoal, compressed charcoal and vine charcoal. The artist continues to employ this medium because of its versatile ability to capture both gestures and emotions with an intuitive mixture of the soft and the dark.
